Rhizome’s board announced today that its assistant director, Zachary Kaplan, has been named executive director. In a statement, Kaplan said, “In my two years here, I’ve seen the impact of Rhizome’s work on the artists we support, on the fields of research we lead, and on the art and technology communities we bring together. I’m honored to lead this essential organization.”
Kaplan has worked at the New Museum-affiliated nonprofit arts organization for the past two years, where he assisted with the organization of programs, conducted strategic planning and development, and managed events, benefits, campaigns, and external affairs. Previously, Kaplan worked in development at the Renaissance Society in Chicago, and in the education department at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles before that.
Kaplan is also the editor of Rhizome’s upcoming publication of essays, The Born-Digital Art Institution, which focuses on the exchange between art institutions and digital networks. In the first few months of his directorship, Kaplan will usher in a redesigned website, new initiatives for Rhizome’s digital preservation program, and the 8th edition of the art-tech Seven on Seven series (which he had previously managed). Additionally, Kaplan will head the continuing development of Rhizome’s various programs, especially its “First Look” online exhibition series.
Greg Pass, the chairman of Rhizome’s board, said in the same release, “Zach is a proven leader and a passionate advocate for Rhizome’s mission. He brings a wealth of experience and a strong vision to this evolving organization, and we’re excited for him to shape the future of Rhizome.”
