This fall, San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center For The Arts wants Revolution Museum Style Now! On October 24, the institution will open “Alien She,” the first museum show dedicated to the lasting impact of of the punk feminist movement known as Riot Grrrl.
Named after a song by defining Riot Grrrl band Bikini Kill, the exhibition contains work from seven artists influenced by the movement alongside Riot Grrrl ephemera (zines, posters) culled from both institutional and personal archives. Artists in the show include Miranda July, Allyson Mitchell, L.J. Roberts, Stephanie Syjuco, Ginger Brooks Takashai, Tammy Rae Carland, and Faythe Levine.
Curated by Astria Suparak and Ceci Moss, and organized by the Miller Gallery at
Carnegie Mellon University, the exhibition has been traveling the country, making stops at Vox Populi in Philadelphia and the aforementioned Miller Gallery before landing in San Francisco. It will go on to appear at The Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, California, and the Pacific Northwest College Of Art: Feldman Gallery & Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Oregon, before the “tour” comes to an end.
