The New York Times reports that the Rubell Family Collection in Miami will move to a 2.5-acre campus in the city’s Allapattah District in 2018. The new space will be designed by Selldorf Architects, the firm behind the upcoming Frick Collection renovation.
The Rubell Family Collection is currently located in Miami’s Wynwood District, which, since it moved there in 1993, has become a budding arts district, home to a number of artists’ studios, the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, and the Art Miami fair. The new location in the Allapattah District puts the collection outside Miami’s art center. In a statement, ARTnews Top 200 collector Mera Rubell said, “It is time for us to reimagine the Rubell Family Collection in a very exciting emerging neighborhood.”
In its new space, the Rubell Family Collection will have a total of 100,000 square feet. (Its current space, in a warehouse that was formerly owned by the Drug Enforcement Agency, is just 40,000 square feet.) The new campus will have 40 galleries, a sculpture garden, and a restaurant, among other amenities.
