Artadia, the nonprofit that recognizes artists around America with various prizes, has named Sadie Barnette and Carrie Hott the winners of its San Francisco Awards. Given annually to artists in the Bay Area, the awards come with $10,000 and the opportunity to exhibit work at Artadia’s booth at the 2018 San Francisco edition of the Untitled art fair.
Barnette and Hott both deal with the hidden politics of sites in their installations and sculptures. For Barnette, everyday objects such as soda cans and documents reveal the identities of their users, while for Hott, the way works are displayed in institutions brings to the fore pieces of their history.
Simone Bailey, Sofía Córdova, and Davina Semo were also considered for the awards. The selection of the winners was made by Ulrich Museum of Art curator Sally Frater, artist Andrew Kuo, and Dena Beard, director of the Lab.
