Christie’s announced today that Sara Friedlander has been appointed Head of the Department of Post-War and Contemporary Art in New York. In her new role, Friedlander will mentor and lead development of the department’s specialist team and guide New York business and sales. She will also continue her role as Head of the New York Evening Sale, working with the international team to foster business and bring works of art to market. In the past, Friedlander has overseen six of Christie’s most successful auctions, a press statement said.
Friedlander started her career at Christie’s in 2006. Her first project involved the installation of 150 live pigeons for the sale of Kader Attia’s Flying Rats. Since 2009, Friedlander has also been involved in charity auctions, serving as an auctioneer for many non-profits.
Friedlander graduated from Brandeis University with a B.A. in Art History, and minors in Creative Writing and Women’s Studies. She completed her Master’s degree in Fine and Decorative Arts at the Sotheby’s Institute in London, where she wrote her dissertation on late 19th- and early 20th-century American and British periodical illustration.
