Last September, SculptureCenter announced that all of its solo shows in 2016 would feature work by female artists—a plan that, in an ideal world, would not be treated as breaking news, but here we are.
With the exhibition schedule currently underway—there is a show up of work by Rochelle Goldberg, along with works by Jessi Reaves and Anthea Hamilton—the Long Island City institution has announced even more female-centric programming. Along with the shows already planned, Aki Sasamoto will have her first New York solo show in September, and the “In Practice” show of emerging artists, curated by Olga Dekalo, will open in May.
Sasamoto’s most prominent project in the city might be the quite popular Coffee/Tea, which was part of Frieze Projects last May. For that, fairgoers entered a long line that snaked around Sasamoto’s mysterious structure, only to enter a maze where they were faced with certain decisions, one of which was “Coffee, or tea?”
“In Practice” is a showcase for emerging artists, and will feature work by Elizabeth Jaeger, Raque Ford, and Meredith James (along with, um, a few guys, such as Phillip Birch and Jonathan Ehrenberg).
That show opens May 1.
