VIA THE ARTIST PROJECT
Earlier today, the Metropolitan Museum of Art posted the third season of its acclaimed online video series The Artist Project, in which artists from around the world are asked to pick an object from the Met’s collection and talk about it. This season’s 20-artist lineup includes Vito Acconci, LaToya Ruby Frazier, and Thomas Struth.
As with the first two seasons, each episode is three minutes long, which means that all 20 of its episodes, from Ann Hamilton’s through Vik Muniz’s, can be watched in one sitting.
Here’s a sampling of what this season is like:
— Njideka Akunyili Crosby on the Georges Seurat drawing Embroidery; The Artist’s Mother: “It’s so cheesy to say they are beautiful, but you can’t deny that. They really are beautiful drawings. I guess we are always taught now to ask why. It’s not enough to say it’s beautiful.”
— Raymond Pettibon on J.M.W. Turner: “I don’t have a good visual memory, nor am I particularly good at drawing from life. Nature has a tendency not to cooperate…You almost experience [the painting] like its source.”
— Kalup Linzy on Édouard Manet: “When I see these, I think about preparing myself to play a role and the research to get the body gestures down. I always, I don’t want to say wish, but imagine myself living in a different time period. So I tend to go into old paintings and imagine myself in those spaces.”
