Shelley and Donald Rubin have long been supporters of arts organizations and institutions in all five boroughs of New York City. The beneficiaries of the couple’s largess have included the Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, the Queens Museum of Art, the Bronx Museum of Art, and, of course, their own Rubin Museum in Manhattan.
The Rubins’ philanthropic endeavors within the city limits expanded last year when they announced that the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation was starting an Art and Social Justice initiative, which pledged to support local arts institutions that fight for social change. Today, the first recipients of that initiative’s grants program were announced, and the list comprises 46 different operations from different parts of the city, including the Abrons Art Center on the Lower East Side, Council on the Arts & Humanities For Staten Island, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling on 155th Street. They will split a gift of nearly $1 million, with each organization receiving anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000
The news was first reported by The New York Times. See the full list of grant recipients below.
