After a warrant was placed for his arrest following the illegal tagging of Detroit buildings, Shepard Fairey has turned himself in to Detroit authorities, the Detroit Free Press reported earlier today. Fairey flew in to Detroit, from Los Angeles, this morning. Last week, when he was in Los Angeles, he was arrested in LAX and released soon after Detroit officials decided not to extradite him.
The Detroit Police put an arrest warrant out for Fairey because he had allegedly caused $9,000 in damage to private and public buildings when he was in Detroit in May. Fairey had been hired by Dan Gilbert to make a 18-story mural for a park, but, after the street artist’s tags appeared in 14 other locations throughout the city, without any authorization, the Detroit Police called for his arrest.
Fairey is currently being arraigned by the Detroit Police. It seems as though, this time, he’ll have to listen to his tags, and obey orders from The Man.
