COURTESY SOBEY ART AWARD
This morning, the shortlist was announced for the Sobey Art Award, a Canadian contemporary art prize that gives more than $100,000 CAD ($76,474) to emerging artists under the age of 40. The winner who emerges from the pool of five, which was culled from a longlist of 25, will receive $50,000 CAD ($38,237).
The Sobey is one of the country’s most prestigious contemporary art awards, and it searches across the continent for its prospective winners, as the longlist is compiled of five nominees each from these five regions: the West Coast and the Yukon, the Prairies and the North, Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic Provinces. The shortlist chooses a single nominee from each region.
The jury consists of curators from Canada’s most prominent institutions, and past winners include David Altmejd and Abbas Akhavan. The 2016 winner will be announced at a gala November 1. The full shortlist is below.
Jeremy Shaw (West Coast & Yukon)
Brenda Draney (Prairies & North)
Charles Stankievech (Ontario)
Hajra Waheed (Quebec)
William Robinson (Atlantic)
