The winners of the first annual prize doled out by Los Angeles independent exhibition space The Mistake Room (this space itself has only been active for just over a year) were announced today. The two prizes, TMR International Artist Prize and the TMR LA Artist Prize, were given to Simon Fujiwara and Samara Golden, respectively.
For the prize, both artists will receive the gift of unrestricted cash—$15,000 for Fujiwara and $10,000 for Golden. London-born artist Fujiwara is known for autobiographical investigations into identity and sexuality that blur the lines between fact and fiction, while Golden creates engulfing installations that explore what she calls “the sixth dimension.”
The founder and director of TMR, Cesar Carcia, said in a release: “Both Simon and Samara have already developed impressive bodies of work and received great acclaim from institutions and curators alike. We hope that the TMR International Artist Prize and the TMR LA Artist Prize, respectively, will help advance their current projects and support bold and ambitious growth in their thinking and their work.”
