Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, New York, has announced the recipients of its 2016 Emerging Artist Fellowship. The selected artists, who all receive institutional support and funding, began work last month on various projects in the park, and will continue until the exhibition opens to the public on September 25.
In a press release, the fellowship is described as a “singular opportunity for rising artists to experiment with ambitious, large-scale public art.” Visitors to the exhibition in September can prepare themselves for, among other projects, a sky-high floating version of Socrates Sculpture Park, and a scattering of life-sized Christopher Walken busts poking out of bushes.
After an open call drew 275 candidates, the final pool was chosen by a group of advisors including Queen Museum curator Larissa Harris and Amanda Hunt, assistant curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Previous recipients of this fellowship have included Hank Willis Thomas, Wade Guyton, and Sanford Biggers.
This year’s fellowship artists are: Liene Bosquê, Travis Boyer, Andrew Brehm, Sable Elyse Smith, Lea Cetera, Dachal Choi and Mathew Suen, Onyedika Chuke, Galería Perdida, Dylan Gauthier, Dmitri Hertz, Madeline Hollander, Olalekan Jeyifous, Lia Lowenthal, Elizabeth Tubergen, Bryan Zanisnik.
