Sotheby’s in London is selling a pair of “cherub-shaped art nouveau buttons” that belonged to Alice Pleasance Liddell, Lewis Carroll’s inspiration for Alice In Wonderland. Liddell wore the buttons “from childhood to the date of her death,” according to an inscription in the presentation box that houses them. They are estimated to sell for £2,000–£3,000 ($3,108–$4,662).
The buttons are included in Sotheby’s “English Literature, History, Children’s Books and Illustrations” sale on Tuesday, which also includes Hans Krebs’s Nobel Prize medal, an enigma machine, and an unpublished drawing of Winnie the Pooh by E.H. Shepard.
