COURTESY ST. LOUIS ART MUSEUM
The St. Louis Art Museum has acquired Horace Pippin’s 1943 painting Sunday Morning Breakfast. The museum purchased the painting for $1.5 million through New York’s Alexandre Gallery, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which first reported the news. The painting will be on view starting December 18 and is part of a reinstallation of the museum’s galleries.
Incidentally, 1943 is the year that SLAM received a gift of 60 paintings, prints, and drawings as part of the Federal Art Project, which formed the basis of its 20th century collection. Pippin joins a strong selection of African American artists at the institution, including Charles White, Archibald Motley, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, Kara Walker, and Julie Mehretu.
