The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam announced today that it has received a major donation of contemporary art from German collector Thomas Borgmann. The donation includes over 600 works, among them pieces by Jack Goldstein, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Cosima von Bonin. A significant portion of the art in the gift is by artists whose work is not yet in the collection of any Dutch museum.
“I have closely followed the Stedelijk ever since my first visit in the 1960s” Borgmann said in a statement. “This museum felt like a natural home for these works.”
In addition to the donation, the museum will receive from Borgmann a long-term loan of works by Martin Kippenberger and Isa Genzken. The museum also announced that it will be mounting an exhibition of the newly acquired collection in November 2017, taking up the entirety of the top floor of its 19th-century building.
