The Studio Museum in Harlem has revealed its newest group of artists-in-residence: Allison Janae Hamilton, Tschabalala Self, and Sable Elyse Smith. From April 2018 onward, the women will work in the museum’s 127th Street building.
The Studio Museum’s artists-in-residence program was started in 1968 and has over the years supported emerging artists of African and Latinx descent. It has helped launch the careers of many, from Simone Leigh to MacArthur “Genius” fellow Njideka Akunyili Crosby.
Most years, the artists chosen for the residency program have been lesser-known to New York audiences. This year’s batch, however, is something of an exception: all three currently have work on view in museum shows around New York. Hamilton and Smith’s work can be seen at the Studio Museum’s “Fictions” show. Self’s paintings are on view downtown, at the New Museum’s “Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon.” Smith’s work is included in “Trigger” as well, and she is the subject of a solo exhibition at the Queens Museum.
