The Studio Museum in Harlem announced today that it has hired Amanda Hunt, who has been curator of LAXART in Los Angeles since 2011, to be its new assistant curator, taking the place of Thomas J. Lax, who was tapped by New York’s Museum of Modern Art to be associate curator in its media and performance department in May.
Hunt has an M.A. in curatorial practice from California College of the Arts, and has curated widely in Los Angeles and elsewhere. “I’ve truly enjoyed being a part of the close-knit West Coast creative community,” she said in a statement released to press, “but I am thrilled to be returning to New York to serve the vital and expanding mission of the Studio Museum under Thelma Golden’s leadership.”
The Studio Museum also named the latest participants in its artists in residence program, which comes with 12 months of studio space at the museum, a $20,000 fellowship and a $1,000 stipend for materials. Those artists are Sadie Barnette (who was born in Oakland, California, in 1984), Lauren Halsey (Los Angeles, 1987), and Eric Mack (Columbia, Maryland, 1987).
