Today it was announced by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority that Suhanya Raffel will be taking over the position of executive director of the M+ Museum, located in Hong Kong. M+, which is set to open in 2019, is a highly anticipated museum of Asian visual culture and art from the 20th and 21st centuries.
Raffel is currently the deputy director and the director of collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia, having been appointed in 2013. Previously, she led the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at the Queensland Gallery of Art, where she had been since 1994.
In a statement on the WKCDA website, the chairman of M+’s board, Carrie Lam, said:
Ms Raffel is an expert in Asian contemporary art, and has over 30 years of professional experience in museum management. She brings with her a wealth of museum management experience in the areas of curatorship, exhibitions and collection development. Her capable leadership, professionalism and vision inspire our confidence in the successful opening of a world-class M+ Museum in just three years’ time.
Raffel will be joining the museum in November, nearly a year after the previous director, Lars Nittve, resigned.
