SUMI INK CLUB
New York’s Rawson Projects is teaming up with the Los Angeles–based Sumi Ink Club this month to stage a trilogy of drawing parties, to be held on three concurrent Saturdays starting July 11 and wrapping up July 25. The events will be all ages and the gallery will provide ample ink and brushes, the end result being one big drawing that is collectively owned by everyone who had a hand in making the work.
Started in 2005, Sumi Ink Club is a participatory drawing project created by Sarah Rara and Luke Fischbeck, who also comprise the band Lucky Dragons. Meetings can happen anywhere and with anyone, as long some simple guidelines are followed (taken from the Sumi Ink Club website):
• meetings are free and open to the public of all ages
• everyone uses the same materials (brushes and ink, or equivalent)
• everyone works on the same drawing surface
• anyone can add to anyone else’s drawing
• move around the drawing, don’t get stuck in one spot
• don’t dilute the ink, blackest black is best
• everyone agrees when the drawing is finished
The end result is always public domain, and free to use online or in zines. Once again, meetings will happen on July 11, 18, and 25 (all Saturdays), from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
