Suzanne Weaver Named Curator of Contemporary and Modern Art at San Antonio Museum of Art

The San Antonio Museum of Art has announced the hire of Suzanne Weaver as the museum’s new Brown Foundation Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, effective June 20. In her new role, Weaver will lead the growth of the institution’s modern and contemporary program as well as a reinstallation of the contemporary galleries.

Weaver, a former interim director at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, currently works as an adviser to private collectors in the Dallas area, with whom she works to augment their personal collections and identify potential acquisitions. Last month, she co-curated a group show titled 3 am eternal at an alternative Dallas art space. The show featured 30 artists based in Los Angeles, New York, or Texas, including Samantha McCurdy, Chivas Clem, Keith Edmier, and James Franco.

Prior to working at ICA Miami, Weaver served as a curator of modern and contemporary art and director of adult programs at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, from 2009 until 2014. There, she curated over 15 exhibitions and arranged over 30 acquisitions and gifts, including pieces by James Brooks, John Chamberlain, Doherty, Sam Gilliam, Mark Handforth, and Joyce Pensato.

Before that, Weaver held the position of Nancy and Tim Hanley Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art. There, she revamped the museum’s international emerging artist exhibition series, Concentrations, and as such was responsible for organizing the first U.S. solo museum shows for artists such as Doug Aitken, Jennifer Allora, Guillermo Calzadilla, Maureen Gallace, Anri Sala, and Charline von Heyl, and the world premiere of Phil Collins’s video trilogy, the world won’t listen (2007).

Weaver’s hire marks the second major curatorial appointment the San Antonio Museum of Art has made this year. In January, the museum named Dr. Emily J. Sano its Coates-Cowden-Brown Senior Advisor for Asian Art.
