The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery in Saratoga Springs, New York, has received two grants, from the Terra Foundation for American Art and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The Terra Foundation has given the museum $100,000, while the Warhol Foundation has awarded it $60,000.
Both grants will go toward the Tang’s upcoming exhibition “The Imagist Object: New Dimensions in Chicago Art, 1964-1980,” which is slated to open in September 2018. That show will loosely focus on the rise of Chicago Imagism, the mid-20th-century movement led by Illinois artists who responded to Pop by creating incisive, cartoon-like work. Tang Museum director Ian Berry will curate the show with John Corbett and Jim Dempsey, the owners of the Chicago-based Corbett vs. Dempsey Gallery.
The Terra Foundation grant will partially go toward a catalogue for the exhibition. The book and the show will be part of Art Design Chicago, a year-long initiative intended to promote the Chicago art scene through a series of shows, publications, and documentaries.
