The Terra Foundation for American Art has given $100,000 to the Center for Urban Education at DePaul University in Chicago. The center will put the money toward helping public schools in low-income neighborhoods arrange trips to visit cultural organizations taking part in next year’s Art Design Chicago initiative.
The grant is expected to assist 4,500 students and 150 teachers across 50 schools in 2018. Part of the money will be put toward helping Chicagoan schools better incorporate arts education into their curricula.
The foundation also announced that it will be providing two grants to institutions participating in Art Design Chicago. One grant will go to the DePaul Art Museum, for its Barbara Jones-Hogu show, and another will go to Theaster Gates, who is organizing an exhibition about the Johnson Publishing Company—which was responsible for printing Jet and Ebony magazines—for the Rebuild Foundation. (The latter show will be presented at the Stony Island Arts Bank.)
Amy Zinck, the Terra Foundation’s executive vice president, said in a statement that the grants will help “spark engagement and dialogue about the role Chicago’s creative communities have played in shaping our city—a conversation we hope will continue well beyond next year.”
