This April, at a gala at the Bronx Museum of the Arts in New York, musician and arts advocate Swizz Beatz will present a new award for social justice. The first winners of the award will be Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman, who are being honored for their organization For Freedoms.
Also being honored are Junko Kobayashi, the president of the Stan Lee Foundation, who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, and art journalist, curator, and playwright Carey Lovelace, who will receive the Visionaries Pathmaker Award.
“For the first time, this year’s gala will recognize visionary leaders dedicated to social justice, and we are thrilled to present three new awards that work toward a more equitable and civil society,” Deborah Cullen, the Bronx Museum’s executive director, told ARTnews. “The honorees share the Bronx Museum’s commitment to a more open and democratic art world—one in which all voices are welcomed and empowered, and one that express our tremendous cultural and community wealth.”
