The Axel & May Vervoordt Foundation and the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia will present a show called “PROPORTIO” at the Palazzo Fortuny in Venice, which will run from May 9 through November 22. This fifth edition of their biennial exhibition series, curated by Axel Vervoordt and Daniela Ferretti, coincides with the 56th Venice Biennial and “will explore the omnipresence of universal proportions in art, science, music and architecture,” according to a news release.
“The exhibition is an invitation to reflect on the dynamic relationship between order and chaos,” the release says, referencing touchstones such as the “Sacred Numbers,” the Fibonacci sequence, the hypotenuse, Squaring the Circle, and Le Corbusier’s Modulor.
The exhibition will merge new works by Marina Abramovic (a sound installation, in collaboration with sci-fi writer Kim Stanley Robinson), Anish Kapoor, Massimo Bartolini, Rei Naito, Michael Borremans, Izhar Patkin, Maurizio Donzelli, Chang-Sup Chung, Otto Boll, Francesco Candeloro, Riccardo De Marchi, and Arthur Duff, with existing pieces by Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Le Corbusier, Alberto Giacometti, Carl André, Agnes Martin, Fausto Melotti, Mario Merz, and Francesco Candeloro, with a few Egyptian artifacts, a series of Dutch Old Master architectural paintings, a Botticelli portrait, and a monumental sculpture by Antonio Canova to round out the show. Shuji Mukai will present an installation and performance work that focuses on the way we experience art spaces in the age of social media.
In collaboration with architect Tatsuro Miki, Vervoordt has also designed five large architectural pavilions that will transform the Sala Gondola on the ground floor of the Palazzo, each built according to “sacred” dimensions and using only organic materials.
