The nonprofit philanthropic arts organization VIA Art Fund has announced its fall 2015 grant recipients, who received a combined total of $190,000.
In recognition of work that falls within VIA’s three core values of “artistic production, thought leadership, and public engagement,” the grant-recipient projects are:
- Jenny Holzer’s Projections, a forthcoming semi-permanent “poetry-based” installation at MASS MoCA;
- Robin Rhode’s Erwartung: A Street Opera, a reimagining of Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg’s opera set within a South African context, performed last week in Times Square as part of Performa 15;
- “Non-Fiction,” a future group exhibition at the Underground Museum in Los Angeles that is set to feature Kara Walker, Robert Gober, Henry Taylor, and Deana Lawson. The show will be free of charge, continuing the mission of the late artist and curator Noah Davis to bring art to underserved communities; and
- A new, site-specific outdoor sculpture (artist to be announced) for the 2016 season of High Line Art in New York.
In a press statement, Bridgitt Evans, VIA’s president and cofounder, said her organization’s goal is to be “neither an institutional nor a private funder.” Rather, she said, “VIA offers an innovative philanthropic model for collectors, patrons, and art enthusiasts to engage directly with artists and curators, and provides a national versus a regional reach for our donors.”
