Pictures at an Exhibition presents images of one notable show every weekday.
Today’s show: “We Call It Ludwig: The Museum Is Turning 40!” is on view at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne through Sunday, January 8. The museum’s entire curatorial team invited 25 artists to respond to the museum’s significance for the show, which also includes highlights from its holdings. The exhibition marks three anniversaries for the institution: Josef Haubrich’s 1946 donation of his modernist collection to the city of Cologne, Peter and Irene Ludwig’s 1976 donation of their collection to the museum, and the 1986 opening of the museum’s current building. “The title ‘We Call It Ludwig’ was purposely kept open-ended, since the exhibition is not intended to offer a concrete definition, but a variety of subjective perspectives that together form a kaleidoscopic image of the institution,” reads the press release for the show.
