The enterprise behind .art, the new top-level domain created specifically for artists and art-related institutions, announced today that more than 60 organizations will take on “.art” URLs. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, for example, will create a microsite with the URL lacma.art. Organizations, institutions, and artists such as the Stedelijk Museum, Marina Abramović, and RAW Material Company are among those planning to create .art microsites within the coming few weeks.
According to .ART, the domain is the first intended exclusively for the art world. It is meant to distinguish art institutions from other websites—something like becoming verified on Twitter but with a narrower reach. Art organizations interested in transitioning to the .art domain can begin applying in February 2017; it officially launches to the public in the summer.
“Our mission is to preserve the cultural legacy of the global art world,” Ulvi Kasimov, the founder of .ART, explained in a statement. “We are honored that so many respected institutions from all over the world share our vision and conviction that .ART will transform the arts community’s relationship with the internet and help protect their brand’s heritage online.”
Alongside those transitioning to the top-level domain, several of the early adopters are planning to retool aspects of their websites in the process. The Fondation Cartier has plans to make its collection available online, while Hauser & Wirth will launch a new site dedicated to the gallery’s history on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. Tate, LACMA, the Multimedia Art Museum, and the Guggenheim Museum also have plans to offer .art microsites for their collections.
