New York’s Guernsey’s auction house held a sale of memorabilia from the estate of Waylon Jennings Sunday night in Phoenix. Among some of the lots up for grabs were a motorcycle once owned by Buddy Holly that Jennings kept after Holly’s death in a plane crash (Jennings was in Holly’s touring band and narrowly escaped his own demise by giving up his seat to the Big Bopper). Also for sale were Jennings’s boots, which once belonged to Hank Williams Sr. Oh, and two braids of genuine Willie Nelson hair. Nelson gave Jennings the hair in 1983 to encourage the singer’s recent sobriety. Sure makes me never want to have a drink again! According to The Dallas Morning News, the lucky bidder spent $37,000 on Willie’s lovely locks, which is a steal, depending on what this person decides to do with the hair. Actually, I’d rather not know.
Now seems about as appropriate a time as ever to listen to my favorite cut (pun intended, jerks) off 1978’s Waylon & Willie LP.
