The Worcester Art Museum, in Massachusetts, announced today that it has been awarded a three-year grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to support a series of projects focused on the museum’s collection of pre-contemporary American art. The award totals $825,000.
The grant will be used to support both research and exhibitions that help to explore new narratives surrounding the collection. In 2018, for instance, the museum will exhibit several stained-glass windows by John La Farge and Louis Comfort Tiffany, which have not been on display in over 40 years. Another planned project will involve showing WAM’s selections from its 5,000-work collection of pre-1945 North American drawings, rare maps, prints, and photographs.
In a statement, Jon L. Seydl, WAM’s director of curatorial affairs, explained that “many of these works have received less attention for research and exhibition in the last twenty years as the museum focused on presenting its colonial and 20th-century holdings.”
