The estate of Chris Burden has named Yayoi Shionoiri as its first executive director. In the new position, she will also work as the executive director of the studio of Nancy Rubins, the late artist’s wife.
Shionoiri previously worked at the online art startup Artsy, where she served as general counsel and head of Asia strategy, and, before that, as associate general counsel for the Guggenheim Museum in New York. She has also worked as legal adviser to Takashi Murakami’s studio and management enterprise Kaikai Kiki.
Shionoiri said she hopes to apply her experience with art in the digital realm to the legacy of Burden, whose early performance works engaging danger and power dynamics remain in the form of documentation, and to work by Rubins, who makes monumental sculptures.
